After the rum punch!
After the rum punch!

Antigua Adventures: A Day to Remember

What happens when you mix a mini bus full of lively cruise ship tourists, a proud and passionate guide, and an island bursting with charm? You get one fantastic day trip around Antigua! A day to remember!

The adventure kicked off with our lovely guide—a local lady, who could have been an ambassador for the island. She kept us on our toes, quizzing us about Antigua’s history and landmarks, before letting us in on all its secrets. Her pride in her island shone as she explained how tourism is the heartbeat of the economy. It really made me think about how these islands need visitors between November and April.

Our first stop? Shirley Heights, where breath-taking panoramic views of the sparkling Caribbean coastline had us scrambling for photos (or the perfect Instagram story angle). I’ll add one! You know the type of view that instantly makes you want to stay forever?

Then it was time to immerse ourselves in history at Nelson’s Dockyard, a beautiful relic of the colonial era, surrounded by colourful yachts bobbing in the bay. The day got even sweeter with free rum punch—because when in Antigua, right? Of course, the highlight was stepping into Lord Nelson and Mrs. Mary Moutray’s cut-out boards for a cheeky photo op. Let’s just say, Nelson probably never looked happier than when wearing my husband’s grin. Plus, we both looked quite happy too after the rum punch!

The cherry on top of this Antiguan sundae came that evening, as we strolled into Hemingways fish restaurant. The shrimp, flambéed to perfection, brought the whole day together. It was the kind of meal to remember, in the old colonial building, what a wonderful atmosphere.

Antigua truly showed us its heart and soul in a single day. Whether it’s sipping rum punch, gazing at the stunning view at Shirley Heights, or enjoying culinary fireworks, this island knows how to make every moment unforgettable. Trust me, it’s a day trip worth booking twice! In fact, we have! We are going back next year.
