If you’re looking for a mini break that feels worlds away yet is unbelievably easy to reach, Carcassonne is one of those destinations that surprises you in the best possible way. We flew from East Midlands Airport and honestly, the journey couldn’t have been smoother. The flight was incredibly short, and once we landed, it was just 15 minutes from the airport to the centre of Carcassonne. No long transfers, no faff, you’re practically on holiday the moment you step off the plane.
Carcassonne is split into two distinct areas. The historic medieval Cité and the newer lower town known as the Bastide Saint Louis. Both offer completely different vibes, and together they make Carcassonne feel like two holidays in one.
Where We Stayed: 45BB, A Gorgeous Townhouse B&B With a Pool
We stayed at 45BB, a beautiful large townhouse B&B that feels like a secret hideaway right in the heart of Carcassonne. It’s one of those places that instantly makes you relax. Stylish rooms, a peaceful atmosphere, and a pool that becomes the perfect spot to cool off after exploring the city walls. The hosts were wonderful, and the whole place has that boutique, homely feel that makes you want to stay longer. If you look it up online, you’ll see exactly what I mean. The Medieval Cité: A Real Life Fairytale
Carcassonne’s old town is the part everyone imagines. The UNESCO listed medieval fortress, complete with turrets, drawbridges, and winding cobbled streets. It genuinely looks like something straight out of a storybook. There is a fun little connection here. Walt Disney is said to have taken inspiration from Carcassonne when designing Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Once you’re standing in front of those towering walls, it’s easy to see why.
We did the tour of the city walls, which is absolutely worth it. Walking along the ramparts gives you incredible views over the rooftops and countryside, and you get a real sense of the history. It’s one of those experiences where you keep stopping to take photos because every angle looks dramatic.

One of my favourite moments was going back at night. The whole fortress lights up, glowing gold against the dark sky. It’s magical, quieter, atmospheric, and honestly one of the best ways to see the Cité.
The New Town: Cafés, Bars, Shops and a More Local Feel
Just below the medieval fortress is the newer part of Carcassonne, and it has a completely different charm. Think wide squares, tree lined streets, fountains, and a relaxed French café culture. It’s the perfect place to wander without a plan.
We spent time in the main square, enjoying coffees, amazing food wine, and of course, people watching. The cafés and bars here are lovely. Modern but still very French, with outdoor seating that makes you want to linger. There are plenty of shops too, from little boutiques to more familiar brands, so you can easily spend a few hours browsing.
This part of Carcassonne feels lived in and local, which balances the medieval drama of the Cité perfectly. It’s nice to have both worlds within walking distance.
Food, Wine and Relaxed Evenings
Carcassonne has no shortage of places to eat and drink. Whether you want traditional French dishes, tapas style plates, or just a glass of wine in the sun, you’ll find it easily. Evenings in the new town are especially nice. Warm air, twinkling lights, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel instantly at home.
Back at 45BB, the pool was perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. It’s rare to find a B&B with such a lovely outdoor space, and it really added to the trip.
A Trip Down the Canal
One of the highlights was taking a boat trip along the Canal du Midi, which runs through Carcassonne. It’s calm, scenic, and a great way to see the area from a different perspective. The canal is lined with trees and old stone bridges, and the whole experience is peaceful. A nice break from the busy tourist spots.
If you’re visiting during warmer months, the short canal trip is a lovely way to slow down and enjoy the sunshine.
