October half term is one of the best times of year for teachers and education staff to travel. The weather is still warm across southern Europe, the summer crowds have disappeared, prices drop, and everything feels calmer. If you’re craving sunshine, quiet beaches, good food and a proper reset before the Christmas term, these are the destinations that work best, including places I’ve personally visited and photographed.

This guide is written specifically for teachers, teaching assistants, school staff and anyone working in education who wants an easy, warm and crowd‑free October escape.

Where I’ve Been (and Why These Places Work So Well in October)

I’ve personally travelled to the Canary Islands, Alicante, Cyprus, Malta, Madeira and Rome. All either in October or just into November, as half term can run into the beginning of November. So everything in this guide is based on real experience. You’ll see my own photos throughout the post.

These destinations are reliable, warm, easy to get to and perfect for teachers who want a mix of walking, eating, relaxing and sunshine.

1. Canary Islands (Lanzarote, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura)

The Canary Islands are the most reliable October destination for teachers and education staff. They’re warm, sunny, easy to reach and feel calm compared to summer.

Why they’re perfect in October

• Warmest weather in Europe

• Sea still warm enough to swim

• Quiet beaches

• Great for families and couples

• Short flights

• Loads of walking routes and coastal paths

• Resorts stay fully open.

The one drawback is often the price, but check for not just 7 nights, check 6 night stays and be prepared to hunt for cheap flights on Skyscanner, Kayak etc.

My experience

I’ve been to Lanzarote several times, including Playa Blanca, and it’s one of the easiest October destinations. Clean beaches, calm promenades, warm evenings and plenty of places to eat. It’s ideal if you want sunshine without crowds and a holiday that feels effortless.

Playa Blanca in particular is perfect for teachers who want a calm, easy holiday with gentle walks, good food and relaxed evenings.

2. Alicante

Alicante is brilliant for teachers who only want a short break. It’s warm but not too hot, easy to get around and perfect for 3–4 nights of sunshine.

• Perfect for a quick reset.

My experience

I visited Alicante in October and January, I loved how simple it was to get there from the airport. Just hop on the bus. It’s warm enough to sunbathe, cool enough to walk around the marina, and loads of places to sit outside with a drink. It’s ideal if you want a short, affordable break that still feels like a proper holiday. You can even go to Benidorm for the day!

3. Cyprus

Cyprus is one of the hottest places in Europe in October. If you want guaranteed sunshine, this is the place.

• Still feels like summer

My experience

Cyprus in October felt like late August. Clear skies every day, warm evenings and proper beach weather. If you want heat, choose Cyprus, it’s one of the most reliable warm‑weather destinations. All the Greek islands tend to shut down towards the end of October, so Cyprus is better.

4. Malta

Malta is perfect if you want sunshine and things to explore. It’s warm, safe and full of interesting places to wander around.

• Perfect for culture lovers

My experience

Malta surprised me just how warm it was and my stay included early November. It’s warm, calm and ideal for gentle exploring. You can get some rain. But you could also be lucky, I had really good weather. Perfect if you like walking, eating and relaxed sightseeing rather than lying on a beach all day. Valletta, Mdina and the coastal paths are beautiful in October, take a boat trip too.

5. Madeira

Madeira is one of the calmest destinations you can choose. It’s warm, green and perfect for teachers who want nature, quiet hotels and good food.

My experience

Madeira is one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever visited. October is warm, green and perfect for rest, relaxation and exploring. If you want a holiday that feels restorative rather than busy, Madeira is ideal. The capital, Funchal is fantastic, so much to see and do if you want a busier day there too.

6. Rome (City Break)

If you don’t want a beach holiday, Rome is perfect in October. It’s warm enough to sit outside, cool enough to walk all day and far quieter than summer.

• Ideal for a 3–4 night break

My experience

I did Rome in late October/ early November and it was ideal. Warm days, cooler evenings and no huge queues. Perfect for those who want culture instead of beaches and prefer exploring to sunbathing. There can be the odd short rain shower.

7. Off‑the‑Wall Idea: A Repositioning Cruise

This is a fun suggestion for those who want something different.

Every autumn, cruise ships reposition from Europe to the Caribbean. Some also reposition to Tenerife. These cruises are usually:

• Longer

• Cheaper per night

• Full of sea days

• Calm and relaxing

• Perfect for people who want sunshine and quiet
